What to Include in an Electrical Estimate
- Company name, electrical license and insurance (required)
- Your license number belongs on the estimate, not just the permit application. Homeowners comparing three prices use it to check your standing with the state board, and general contractors need it on file before they can add you to a job. Licensing rules and what must appear on customer documents vary by state, so confirm your own state's requirement.
- Customer, job site and panel location (required)
- Note where the panel is — finished basement, exterior wall, second-floor closet — and where the work is relative to it. Half of an electrical estimate is the length and difficulty of the run between those two points, and a panel behind a finished wall changes the labor before a single circuit is priced.
- Scope of work in countable units (required)
- Price electrical work in things you can count: new circuits, devices, fixtures, home runs, home-run lengths. "Rewire the kitchen" is not a scope. "Eleven new circuits, thirty-one devices, twelve recessed cans" is a scope you can check the job against when the customer adds an island outlet later.
- Existing service size, panel type and open spaces (required)
- Record the main breaker rating, the panel brand and how many spaces are free. A panel with no open spaces turns a simple circuit add into a subpanel, and obsolete equipment that no longer has listed replacement breakers has to be replaced rather than added to. This one field is what most low-ball competing estimates miss.
- Load calculation and capacity check
- Any job adding an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, range or shop feed needs a load calculation before the price is real. The calculation is what turns "add a 50-amp circuit" into "upgrade the service first," and doing it at the estimate stage keeps that conversation off the day the truck is already on site.
- Wiring method, conduit and run conditions (required)
- State NM-B, MC, or conduit type, and whether walls are open or finished. Fishing a run through a finished plaster wall with fire blocking can cost three times the same run stapled to open studs, and the customer sees identical outlets at the end of both. Write the condition so the labor line is defensible.
- Labor hours by rate class (required)
- Break out journeyman, apprentice and helper hours at separate rates rather than blending everything into one number. It shows the customer you are not billing master-electrician time for pulling wire, and it gives you a real basis for pricing change orders later at the same rates.
- Material list and how long material pricing holds (required)
- List panels, breakers, wire, boxes and devices with quantities. Copper and gear pricing moves, and load centers and specialty breakers have had long lead times, so state how long your material pricing is good for — a fourteen to thirty day window is common — instead of eating an increase on a job that starts in two months.
- Permit fees, inspections and utility coordination (required)
- Say who pulls the permit, who pays the fee, and how many inspections the price includes. A service upgrade also needs the utility to disconnect and reconnect, which is scheduled by them and not by you — note the expected power-off window so the customer plans around it instead of calling you at hour six.
- Owner-supplied fixtures and allowances
- If the customer is buying their own fixtures, set an allowance for what you would have supplied and say plainly that you warrant the installation but not the equipment. Fixtures that arrive missing parts or with the wrong mounting hardware are a labor problem, and the estimate is where you decide who owns that.
- Exclusions (required)
- List what the price does not cover: drywall cutting and patching, paint, trenching and concrete, low-voltage and data, temporary power, and any abatement of knob-and-tube, asbestos or lead. On electrical work the patching question comes up on nearly every remodel, and it is far cheaper to answer it in writing beforehand.
- Estimate variance and contingency (required)
- State the range this estimate is good for — plus or minus ten percent is common on remodel work — and what triggers a re-price: aluminum branch wiring, an ungrounded system, blocked wall cavities, or a panel that fails inspection for reasons predating your work. This sentence is the difference between an estimate and an unfunded fixed price.

How to Write an Electrical Estimate

Open the panel and count before you price anything
Photograph the panel label, the breaker layout and the meter. Record main breaker size, brand, and free spaces. Then count what the job adds: circuits, devices, fixtures, home runs. This inventory is the electrical job estimate template's whole foundation — everything below is arithmetic on these counts.

Photograph the pre-existing conditions
Double-tapped breakers, ungrounded three-prong receptacles, missing GFCI protection at the kitchen and baths, buried junction boxes, a bootleg ground. Photograph all of it before you price the job. Once the permit opens the house to an inspector these get flagged, the customer hears it as something you caused, and the photos are what turn that into a priced change order instead of an argument you lose.

Run a load calculation if the job adds load
EV chargers, heat pumps, ranges, hot tubs and shop subpanels all need a capacity check before you can name a price. Do it while you are on site. If the existing service will not carry the new load, the estimate becomes a service upgrade plus the original work, and the customer needs to see both numbers.

Separate labor from materials
Put journeyman, apprentice and helper hours on their own lines at their own rates, and list gear and wire with quantities. Blended pricing hides the fact that most of an electrical work estimate is time, and it leaves you nothing to point at when a change order needs pricing.

Price the run conditions, not the outlet count
Note for each area whether walls are open, finished, plaster, or masonry, and how far each home run travels. Two jobs with the same device count can differ by twenty labor hours based on this alone, and writing it down is what makes your number survive a comparison against a lower one.

Add permits, inspections and utility coordination
Include the permit fee at cost, name the inspections in the price, and if the service is coming down, state the expected power-off window and who calls the utility. Customers who lose power for a day without warning remember it longer than they remember the price.

Write the exclusions and the variance
List patching, paint, trenching, low-voltage and abatement as exclusions, then state the plus-or-minus range and what triggers a re-price. An electrical estimate that reads like a fixed price will be treated as one, no matter what the header says.

Total it, date it, and set an expiry
Total labor, materials, permits and any allowance, then put a date on the material pricing. Two to four weeks is a realistic window given how breaker and load-center pricing has moved.

Homeowners want a PDF they can print and compare. - An estimate is your best price given what you can see, and it carries a stated variance because behind-the-wall conditions are unknown until demo. A quote is a firm price you commit to for a fixed scope. Most residential remodel electrical work is estimated; new construction and clearly defined jobs like a fixture swap or a panel change on an accessible wall can be quoted. Label the document for what it actually is, because customers treat both the same way once they sign.
- How do you estimate electrical work — per point or per hour?
- Both, and the sheet should show it. Unit pricing per device, per circuit and per fixture is how you build the number fast and consistently, and it is what an electrical work estimate template is really for. Hours are how you defend it and how you price changes. Estimate the units, convert to hours at your production rates, then present labor hours plus a material list.
- Should I show my labor rate and material costs on the estimate?
- On an estimate, usually yes. Showing hours and gear separately is what makes a higher price make sense next to a competitor's single number, and it gives you a documented rate for change orders. Save the single fixed number for a quote, where the breakdown mostly invites line-by-line negotiation on a price you have already committed to.
- Do I include the permit fee in the electrical estimate?
- Include it as its own line at cost, and say how many inspections the price covers. Bundling the permit into labor makes your number look higher than a competitor who left it out entirely, and it hides the fact that a re-inspection caused by another trade's work is not free. Also state who pulls the permit — in most places the licensed contractor doing the work does.
- Can I raise the price after the customer accepts the estimate?
- Only for work outside the scope you estimated, and only with written approval before you do it. That is what the variance statement and the exclusion list are for. Whether and how a signed estimate binds you depends on your state's contract and home-improvement rules, so have a local attorney review your standard change-order language once and then use it consistently.
- Should I charge for an electrical estimate?
- Free for straightforward residential work you are likely to win. Charge a diagnostic or design fee when the visit is the service — troubleshooting a dead circuit, a load study, a panel evaluation for a real estate transaction, or a full-house rewire takeoff that takes half a day. If you charge, say up front whether the fee is credited toward the job.
